Looking for Natural, Talc-Free Baby Powder?

talc-free baby powder

Here’s one safe talc-free baby powder you should definitely try!

Baby powder has become a staple in many households, but recent news about its safety has some dropping it altogether from their bathroom routines. It’s true, Johnson & Johnson recently lost a multi-million dollar lawsuit over claims that its baby powder could cause cancer. That headline alone is enough to make anyone immediately ditch the powder!

However you should know, it’s not the powder that is dangerous, it’s the talc that the Johnson & Johnson brand contains, which had occasionally tested positive for small amounts of asbestos, according to an investigation by Reuters. However, the good news is that there are plenty of talc-free baby powder options that are perfectly safe.

What is Talc?

Talc is a mineral made from the elements magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. Because of its ability to easily absorb moisture, it is commonly used in after shower and beauty products such as talcum powder. It’s useful for keeping the skin dry, which cuts down on friction that can irritate the skin. Parents often used it in their baby’s diapers to prevent diaper rash. The problem is, in its natural form, some talc contains asbestos, a highly toxic substance that is known to cause cancer if it’s inhaled.

Products with Talc

Another brand, Shower to Shower has also been linked to asbestos-containing talcum powder; however, that product is no longer on the shelves. It’s not the only one though. Talc is commonly used in a wide variety of health and beauty products that are still sold and used everyday. They include:

  • Cosmetics
  • Toothpaste
  • Chewing Gum
  • Vitamin Tablets
  • Soap
  • Antiperspirants

Talc is even found in rice and olive oil! … According to research, talc doesn’t seem to pose a risk when it’s ingested through foods such as rice, and oral products such as vitamins and chewing gum. The FDA, however, has issued warnings about the use of talc in body powders and cosmetics.

Johnson & Johnson denies that its products contain asbestos, but records shown in court show that small traces of the substance were detected periodically, and the company covered up the findings. More lawsuits against the health and beauty giant are pending.

Talc-Free Baby Powder

For those of us who don’t want to give up baby powder, consider a talc-free option. Brands such as Ora’s Amazing Herbal offers a talc-free baby powder that you can trust, as well as a fragrance free body powder for adults. Both will keep you moisture free, and help prevent rashes and irritations. Same goes for cosmetics; always check the ingredients before purchase and opt for naturally made products that don’t contain talc.
